Yes…this is an actual place! I read about Happiness Island on Instagram and naturally couldn’t wait to go so I contacted them on Facebook to get some information about how to get there and how much it cost. As with a lot of things in Abu Dhabi it’s difficult to find information. The person messaging me back from their Facebook account was super uninformative and told me to get a boat from ‘the club’, when I asked what time she replied ‘they go all day!
I did some further research online and found that the boat departs from a port beside the British private members club. We arrived there and the security guard directed us where to go. We waited in line, in the very hot August heat and after 20mins a small boat arrived. The boat journey to Happiness Island takes about 20 mins and it’s free. On arrival at the island, men have to pay 200 AED entry with 150AED of this redeemable against food and beverages. Women get in for free. You cannot use money on the island so you have to buy tokens on arrival. The atmosphere was wonderful, chilled music coming from a DJ booth on the left, beach straight ahead and in the middle there is a pool with a swim up bar and everyone is dancing. There are some VIP tables that you can reserve but it was so hot we jumped straight in the pool!
The pool bar is a little bit make-shift and it felt like they had just opened for the season, it was quieter than I expected it to be but maybe that’s because people were put off by the heat. It is the perfect way to spend a Friday in Abu Dhabi, chilled, fun and who doesn’t want to have a few cocktails and dance in a pool! I will definitely return!
