This morning I did something I have wanted to do since I moved here 4 months ago. A friend had her Mum visiting and they invited me to join them at the Eastern Mangroves for an early morning kayak. Perfect opportunity. We booked through the company Noukhada and decided to depart from their E48 launch point which is located beside the Eastern Mangroves Hotel.
We booked the 8am slot and headed towards the Mangroves. It can be a little tricky to find the launch point as it is located down a private road but Noukhada sent one of their guys out to the road to wave us in.
We got our life jackets on and headed out. It takes about 10mins to reach the mangroves and this gives you some time to get used to the kayak and get your balance. I have kayaked before in Thailand but it still took me a little while to get into the groove!
Once you get to the mangroves the only way to kayak is very very slowly! It is quite difficult as you cannot lift the oars too high or they catch on the mangroves but it makes it interesting! As we went out at high tide we couldn’t go the whole way through the mangroves so we did a loop and came back out into the open water instead.
Our instructor then led us to a little beach where we got out of the Kayaks and had some water. From here you can go for a swim but I decided not to bother because I knew I had to get a taxi home and I didn’t want to be soaking wet! I will prepare better for my next trip.
We went out at 8am and were back about 9.30am. The cost is 160AED and the option we chose was the Mangrove Tour. There are lots of options including tours at sunrise and sunset and even a tour including food! (They are included in the entertainer and offer a 2 for 1 option, this needs to be specified at the time of booking). Check out Noukhada if you are in Abu Dhabi and looking for something a little different to do!
