Friends Avenue Cafe, JLT Dubai

On the way back from a golfing trip to  Al Zorah in Ajman, we decided to stop into Dubai for some lunch.  I had been wanting to try out Black Tap for a while but we hadn’t been to Dubai for a few months so hadn’t had the chance yet.  This was the perfect opportunity as we were passing through on the way home so off we went in search of Black Tap.  It is located in the Jumeirah Al Naseem Hotel at Madinat Jumeirah.  We pulled up to the entrance of the hotel and the valets took our car.  We walked inside and from the main entrance lobby there are views across to the Burj Al Arab  which made me even more excited about our lunch.

We made our way to Black Tap and once inside realised we should have made a reservation.  It was Saturday after all and this was one of the many new hot spots in Dubai.  The hostess told us it would be over an hour wait for a table and as all we wanted was a milkshake it seemed pointless to wait.  So off we went to get our car and head somewhere else for a bite instead.  Of course if you don’t dine in one of the establishments at the hotel there is a 150AED charge for the valet parking but we spoke with the concierge and explained the situation so he waived the charge.

After the disappointment of leaving Black Tap, D’s sister mentioned a little cafe that she used to live beside and recommended that we try there instead.  The cafe is called Friend’s Avenue Cafe and is located beside the Pullman JLT hotel in Jumeirah Lake Towers.  By the time we arrived we were now actually hungry and past the milkshake stage so were delighted to discover such a packed menu with options to suit everyone.

We grabbed a seat outside with views over the lake (not quite the Burj but still nice!) and set about devouring the menu options.  I absolutely loved the decor inside the cafe with an old bike hanging from and exposed whitewashed brick wall, Edison light bulbs hanging from the ceiling and cute little chalk boards with different quotes all around the room.

I settled on the Slow Cooked Lamb with Kale and Quinoa and D had the Insanity Burger with House Baked Potato Wedges.

My dish was incredible, I think it is the best single dish of food I’ve had since I moved to the UAE and believe me there has been a lot of good food consumed in the last 10 months, so this is high praise.  The combination of beetroot pachadi, lamb and quinoa was delicious and the portion size was huge.  I managed to restrain myself from devouring the whole portion all at once which meant I could enjoy it all over again once I got back to Abu Dhabi (and I did!).

D’s burger and fries were also delicious, the wedges were a feast on their own!  Unfortunately we were too full to try out one of their desserts but we will be back for sure, and if we are still too full then we’ll get it to go!
